Exterior Siding

Exterior Siding

What is Siding?

Siding is the very broad category of products that used to create the outer layer of the walls of a building. When people mention siding, they are usually referring to the outside/external walls of a building, but siding can also be used to describe products and materials used on internal walls. Siding can refer to walls that are built during new construction or walls that are put onto existing buildings. When siding is added to an existing building it is sometimes placed on top of the original exterior siding, and sometimes the original exterior wall is removed prior to the new siding being applied. For the purposes of this Siding Buyers Guide, we will limit the evaluation to siding that is used on external/outside walls and added to existing structures.

Why Add Siding?

There are a number of reasons to add siding to the exterior of your home. Here are some of the more common ones:
Repair an existing, damaged exterior.
Change the look of your home (to have the faзade look like stone, log, or some other material).
To reduce maintenance costs. For instance, is your existing faзade requires you to paint it every five years, you may choose to replace or cover it with a material that is less expensive to maintain.

What's New About Siding?

If you have not looked into siding for a number of years, you may be surprised. The biggest change has been at the "high end" of siding, where siding buyers now have a wide range of realistic or dramatic looking options in Stone Veneers, Brick Veneers, Manufactured Wood, and Seamless Steel. If you are in the market for siding and your budget permits you to shop for materials more expensive than vinyl and aluminum siding, you should really check out these newer alternatives. And don't just shop for siding online or in a brochure, you should shop for siding in showrooms where you can touch it and see it up close and from varying distances.
